Varsity Supports Sport in Mind
This year Varsity is supporting Sport in Mind which is a mental health sports charity, by encouraging athletes to wear blue and purple laces. The laces are available from the Sport Sheffield office in the SU for a small donation so you can support the charity as well.
Sport in Mind was formed in Berkshire in 2011 to use sport to help aid the recovery of people experiencing mental health problems and combat the stigma associated with mental illness. Our work is delivered in partnership with the NHS and has been highly effective in promoting mental wellbeing, improving physical health and empowering individuals to move their lives forward in a positive direction. Since our inception, Sport in Mind has used sport to help over 6,500 people experiencing mental health problems and delivered in excess of 7,000 sport and physical activity sessions across 18 different sports.
For many of us sport is just something we do to have fun, but getting involved in sport really can have a hugely positive impact on our health and wellbeing. At Sport in Mind we also use sport to raise awareness of mental health problems and get people talking about a subject that for a lot of us can sound a little scary. But, you know what, the truth is mental health problems are very common with 1 in 4 of us in the UK being affected each year. Speaking about mental health problems shouldn’t be something to be scared about as it helps us challenge the stereotypes and takes the taboo out of something that really does affect us all.
