Varsity Ice Hockey 2016
The final Varsity event of the year was lively as ever with over 7,000 students in attendance at Sheffield Arena to see University of Sheffield lift the Varsity cup for the fourth year running. For the second year running, the final event beat the record for highest attendance at a Varsity Ice Hockey match outside North America.
With the overall win already in the bag, the ‘Uni of’ crowd brought the energy and enthusiasm throughout the game, despite the eventual 4-3 defeat to Hallam.
Scoring early on, barely three minutes in, Hallam made it clear they weren’t going down without a fight. Though, the real fighting came from both sides as punches were thrown and players pushed during several heated moments throughout the game, and the crowd couldn’t get enough of it. University of Sheffield brought it back in the second period taking it to a 3-3 draw, sending the arena into a state of frenzy desperate to see which team would claim the final victory. But Hallam managed to snag one more goal in the third and final period, continuing their winning streak and holding onto their title as undefeated Ice Hockey Varsity champions. The Sheffield Varsity Ice Hockey once again delivered one of the wildest, most popular events of the tournament and made sure it ended with a bang!
