Sports Park Highlights
The weather may have been dull, but the crowds were not. Despite the cold, all the athletes gave their best performances and made it a truly enjoyable day. With 17 points for the taking, it was anyone’s game.
Men’s Football 4’s kicked off the day in the early afternoon, with the University of Sheffield starting strong with a 2-0 win, followed by wins by Women’s Cricket, Men’s Rugby Union 3’s. Draws in Women’s Rugby Union and Men’s Football 1’s awarding both sides half points. Team Hallam took home the win from an intense match in Women’s Football 2’s, after a lead of 3-1, and a result of 3-2. Team Hallam also triumphed in the Men’s Football 3’s with a 4-2 win. More events were then won by the University of Sheffield, with Men’s Lacrosse 2’s with an impressive 5-2 final score. Uni of Sheffield secured another point after their victory in the Men’s Rugby Union 2’s. University of Sheffield were victorious in Men’s Cricket 1’s and 2’s made the overall Varsity Score 16-6 mid way through the day.
Team Hallam gained a well-earned win in Women’s Football 1’s as the sun began to set on Bawtry Road. Uni of Sheffield were guaranteed the point in the Archery by the end of the second round as only their shooters remained. With the addition of a win to Uni of Sheffield for both Golf and Men’s Rugby League 1’s, and a draw in Men’s Football 2’s, the result before the final event was 17.5-7.5 with Uni firmly leading.
The concluding event was the eagerly anticipated Men’s Rugby Union 1’s, and it certainly did not disappoint. Both the athletes and the crowd found themselves trudging through mud but the atmosphere screamed passion. Team Hallam started very strongly, gaining 12 points before half time. However, Uni of Sheffield dominated the second half almost entirely, providing relentless offence leaving Team Hallam to defend. By the end of the match, Uni of Sheffield had made back the points and 1 crucial addition to make the final score 13-12.
The final results were 18.5 to the University of Sheffield and 7.5 to Sheffield Hallam University. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch, enduring the weather, and a special thanks to all the brilliant athletes.
