Varsity Finals Day
Wednesday 29th March packed all the punch the final day of Varsity should. The events of the day took place at Ponds Forge, Goodwin Sports Centre and the Climbing Works, then closing with Ice Hockey at the Sheffield Arena. Uni of Sheffield were looking to maintain, if not extend their lead and Team Hallam were looking to make ground and catch up.
The Swimming events at Ponds Forge opened with Men’s Swimming, and the point went to Team Hallam. Uni of Sheffield then claimed the point for Women’s Swimming, as well also the both the Women’s Canoe Polo 1’s with a 3-2 victory, and the Men’s 1’s 10-3. Team Hallam secured the win for Korfball 3’s, Korfball 2’s and Korball 1’s after a tight game. Men’s and Women’s Water Polo was won by Team Hallam, giving them another two points. Uni of Sheffield also claimed two well deserved points in the climbing that afternoon which was taking place throughout the day at High Bradfield and the Climbing works.
At Goodwin, Women’s Ultimate Frisbee 1’s saw Uni of Sheffield take the first point at Goodwin. Following that, they won Women’s Lacrosse 1’s and Women’s Hockey 4’s although the Hockey was not worth a point. The next win went to Sheffield Hallam for Men’s Hockey 3’s as their 5-1 triumph halts the overall Varsity win for Uni of Sheffield, who at this point, needed 2 points to be crowned champions again. Sitting on the muddy seats of Goodwin, there were plenty of supporters watching the Men’s Lacrosse 1’s, showing how important they found it to be out there cheering on the players. A half time performance from the Sabrecats Cheerleaders kept spirits high as Uni of Sheffield went into the second period sure of a win. And win they did, making Uni of Sheffield winners of 2017 Varsity! Uni of Sheffield took the points for Men’s Badminton 1`s, 2’s and 3’s as well as Men’s Ultimate Frisbee. Team Hallam however took the point for the Women’s badminton and both University drew the Women’s Hockey 3’s. Leaving the points 45-34 going into the final event of Sheffield Varsity 2017.
The Ice Hockey 1’s saw the UK’s biggest capacity ice rink filled from rink side to the roof in the sell-out event. The arena was filled with the sight of gold and maroon inflatable bang bang sticks as chants echoed throughout the crowds, and hordes of enthusiastic students prepared to cheer their side on.The charged game started with a puck drop, with all eyes on the game. After 3 intense periods, Team Hallam came out victorious with a 6-3 win. Pride beamed from the Hallam supporters as they won Ice Hockey 1’s again. But at the end of the game it was the University of Sheffield who lifted the cup, winning Sheffield Varsity for the 5th time in a row.
