Hosted at University of Sheffield’s home turf, American Football saw the Sheffield Sabres go up against the Sheffield Hallam Warriors, in what was sure to be a momentous game. Held on the 26th March 2017, Team Hallam were looking to pull back a point in an effort to close the gap.
Kicking off just after 1 o’clock, Team Hallam got the game underway and Sheffield Sabres scored almost instantly with a pass play, as number 87 scored a rapid 60 yard touchdown with a run giving them 8 points, 6 points for the try and 2 for the points after touchdown. Sabres kicked off to restart the game as they aimed to further their early lead, as the Warriors are pushed back. A strong run from Team Hallam gave them a few more precious yards as they looked to keep Uni of Sheffield away from the end zone.
However, a foul halved the distance covered and Sabres were back on the offensive. Warriors quickly turned it around as they scored a touchdown with a run almost the length of the pitch as Uni of Sheffield failed to take down number 11. Going for the kick for a 1 point conversion, Team Hallam made the score 8-7 to Uni of Sheffield. Number 19 sprinted down after the Warriors kick it into Sabre’s half and it was another touchdown for Uni of Sheffield. They then lost a 2 point conversion, keeping the score at 14-7. As Team Hallam looked to push forward, Uni of Sheffield put up a strong defence until number 1 pushed straight through with little sign of any blockage from Uni of Sheffield, and a 1 point kick plus the 6 points from the touchdown tied the score at 14-14.
The second quarter saw both teams working hard to put themselves in the lead but a stalemate ensued with a largely defensive quarter. A half time performance by the University of Sheffield Sabrecats provided some well needed excitement after a relatively calm quarter of American Football as the cheer routine gave the teams time to talk tactics and come back stronger.
As the game resumed, Team Hallam worked to move down the pitch, aiming for the end zone. However another quarter showed the two teams to be on very equal footing as they fought for points. The Warriors took the majority of possession and after some discussion between referees and line judges, Hallam were awarded a touchdown and a kick, giving them an additional 4 points. In the final period, Team Hallam furthered their lead scoring another touchdown, but a blocked kick conversion added 6 points to the overall score, putting some real pressure on the Sabres.
The final score was 27-14 to Team Hallam, an impressive win as they created a more comfortable distance in the second half of the match. Congratulations to all athletes – it was a great afternoon of sport in the sunshine. After all the events that took place on Sunday, the overall Varsity score is 24-10 to Uni of Sheffield.
